iFixit’s look inside the iPhone Duo may explain those broken screens and hinges

As is tradition, iFixit has torn open the latest iPhone and laid its parts bare on a table. It found some interesting details about how Apple might be hiding the crease on the Duo's folding screen and gave it a 5/10 repairability score. That might not seem particularly high, but it's the best score the site has given to a foldable yet. The internal screen's matte nano-texture cover doesn't just make it more readable in bright sunlight; it also helps mask the crease by scattering reflections. When looking at the display under a microscope, iFixit also found oval-shaped subpixels arranged at various angles, which the site believes are design … Read the full story at The Verge.

Scott Walker’s The Drift will get under your skin

In my mind, Spooky Season music comes in two distinct flavors. There are the fun, occasionally goofy songs like "The Monster Mash" and John Carpenter's "Halloween Theme." Then there is the genuinely terrifying: Throbbing Gristle, The Body, or Scott Walker's The Drift. This 2006 album from the singer-songwriter is truly upsetting. On it, Walker explores death, disease, and tragedy. But not just from some abstract perspective. There are visceral descriptions of the hanging of Benito Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci. He sings about 9/11, his stillborn twin brother, and the Srebrenica genocide. Lyrically, it's about as dark as an album … Read the full story at The Verge.

A YouTuber dissected an iPhone Duo and thinks he found the cause of crackgate

Social media and the iPhone Duo subreddit are filled with reports of Apple's foldable failing quickly and in spectacular fashion. Some users report having the phone for only a few hours before the hinge seems to catch on something, then audibly crack and break the screen. Tellingly, the cracks all seem to happen in the same place. YouTuber CuriousHagi was able to reproduce the cracked screen during some durability testing of the iPhone Duo. Then he pulled it apart to try and find the culprit. What he found is that the Duo's hinge is quite complex, consisting of a gear-like central hinge and two different types of linking hinges. The piec … Read the full story at The Verge.

Zen Browser is the Arc replacement I was looking for

Launcher-like pinned tabs, pop-over glance view, and more make Zen my go to browser. | Image: Zen Browser I know many of you are mourning the loss of the Arc browser, and I get it. It felt like the first app in a long time to really offer a new approach to browser design. Atlassian bought the company last year and shifted its focus to developing Dia, its even more AI-focused browser. And soon enough, Arc will officially be no more, leaving dedicated users in a lurch. But I abandoned Arc quite some time ago for the Zen Browser and haven't really missed it. This Switch 2 sequel accessory was a few millimeters away from being good

The stick and face buttons are too close for comfort. | Photo: Cameron Faulkner / The Verge The Crkd Nitro Deck was a saving grace for the original Nintendo Switch. The slide-on $59.99 accessory brought Hall effect sticks to drift-plagued consoles - no need to open up your Joy-Con for a complicated repair. The Nitro Deck 2, made for both the original Switch and the larger Switch 2, continues the tradition of having better sticks than what Nintendo puts in even the newest Joy-Con (though these aren't Hall effect or TMR). But it doesn't feel as essential, and there's one thing I really can't stand about it. It's too difficult to use the Nitro Deck 2's ABXY face buttons without the right stick

Instagram is continuing its expansion into living rooms with Instagram for TV, for Apple TV. The company first started testing a version of the platform focused on Reels, live streams, and other video content, blown up for a bigger screen in December of last year. Then, in June, it launched a slew of new features for the app, which is available for Amazon's Fire TV, Samsung Smart TVs, and Google TV. Now Meta is bringing the app to Apple TV, though there's been little fanfare. AI, as it exists today, is incongruent to this Open Source community." The new rules have set off a firestorm in the comments, and even spurred the creation of a rival sub r/trueopensource. Blue Planet III is keeping the rough edges in the age of AI

BBC's Blue Planet III is looking to prove its authenticity by leaving in the less-than-perfect shots. Previous incarnations of the nature series were defined by their gorgeous, crystal-clear footage that seemed almost too good to be real. But one dead giveaway of AI is when things look too polished and seamless. To counter that, Blue Planet III goes warts and all. Pennsylvania will require labels on AI-generated ads

On Thursday, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed the Artificial Intelligence Deceptive Advertising Act into law, requiring disclosures on AI-generated ads. The law requires any ad - whether it's a still image, video, audio, or text - that "has been significantly modified or generated by artificial intelligence" to include a label in the same format as the ad itself. That applies to TV commercials from multi-billion-dollar companies, as well as restaurants' ugly, crowded flyers about their wing specials. Fielded is obsessed with scammers and unhinged Japanese cyberpunk

Lindsay Powell, who releases records under the name Fielded, has spent most of her career subverting expectations and genre conventions. But from moment one, her take on the genre was restless, relentlessly playing with what R&B even means. Her first album, Ninety-Thirty-Thirty, includes songs heavily indebted to '80s synth-pop and features multiple saxophone solos. Lee Chang Dong ponders the ethics of the camera

Possible Love is the latest in a long line of Lee movies that engage with themes of class or labor or religion or compressed modernity, that uniquely Korean affliction, without feeling didactic. The first broken iPhone Duos are here

The iPhone Duo officially goes on sale today, but a few units already have broken screens. According to posts on Reddit about the affected units, the issue appears to be happening at a similar spot on all of them: Some kind of problem shows up on the inner screen along the hinge and a strange bright line (or lines) across the right side of the display. Here's how one user in Australia described what happened to their phone: Had my iPhone Duo for about six hours and had probably opened it fewer than 20 times. I was showing it to a friend, and as I opened it, I felt something around the internal hinge, underneath the screen. As I cont … Read the full story at The Verge.

AWS Transit Gateway and AWS Cloud WAN now support 1:1 NAT

AWS Transit Gateway and AWS Cloud WAN now provide managed one-to-one network address translation (NAT) directly on their attachments, through integration with Regional Private NAT Gateway. This enables customers to connect private networks that share the same IP address ranges without renumbering either network, deploying a NAT appliance, or writing return-traffic rules. Networks with overlapping Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) blocks have long been unable to communicate, a common blocker during mergers and acquisitions, when connecting partner networks over AWS Site-to-Site VPN, in multicloud connectivity, and when independently provisioned VPCs need to interconnect. Death to long-lived static credentials

Fifteen years ago, TLS was something you'd use to protect the most sensitive areas of your app. Then Google, Let's Encrypt, the EFF, and others led the push for HTTPS everywhere, making encryption the default for every request. Without it, anyone between the browser and server can read and tamper with the traffic. OAuth, OIDC, DBSC, and related standards already provide building blocks for secure authentication, but standards alone do not make secure methods the norm. HTTPS needed tooling that made encryption easy and a sustained push that made it expected. Machine-to-machine authentication still resembles HTTPS in 2010, with some vendors and enterprises leading the way while long-lived stat

YouTube says it isn’t testing hiding the dislike button

On Tuesday, I published a story about how YouTube appeared to be testing hiding the dislike button on videos, with at least two users on X sharing screenshots of the dislike button moved into the three-dot menu. But a YouTube spokesperson, in a Wednesday statement to The Verge, confirmed that YouTube is "not testing hiding the dislike button on YouTube for users." However, YouTube is introducing a new UI for creators on their uploaded videos where the dislike button will be moved. Here's the full statement, from spokesperson Kimberly Taylor: We are not testing hiding the dislike button on YouTube for users. We're introducing a new UI for … Read the full story at The Verge.

Tesla says customers can add their own vehicles to the robotaxi fleet next year — will it happen?

For years, Elon Musk has been making big promises to Tesla owners about unsupervised autonomous driving and the ability to add their own vehicles to the company's robotaxi fleet. During today's third-quarter earnings call, the company finally gave itself a deadline. According to Tesla VP for Autonomous Driving Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla owners will be able to add their own vehicles to the company's robotaxi fleet in the second quarter of 2027. Here's his exact quote (emphasis ours): Like I mentioned earlier, the software for Cybercabs and Model Y is the same. And pretty soon we'll be able to release the same software as part of the V15 relea … Read the full story at The Verge.

Data centers could erase decades of air quality gains

A rush of new data centers could bring air pollution roaring back to levels not seen since the 2000s in Texas, which has become ground zero for the physical infrastructure behind generative AI. New and proposed data centers are demanding a tremendous amount of electricity. How developers and utilities meet that demand - with gas turbines or renewable energy - will determine just how dirty things will get. So far, though, things are looking grim. Tech companies and data center developers are devising new ways to get enough electricity, including building out their own power sources. But if all planned data center projects were to plug into … Read the full story at The Verge.
